Samana-Dominican republic

Samana was interesting with good points and bad......

We tendered in Samana which in a strange way was like a little trip on its own.  I enjoyed the life boat transfer and it gave us a chance to speak to like minded people looking as one of Dominica amazing beaches. We found another 3 couples so when we jumped off we grabbed a mini buses taxi.
I found the best way to travel is to jump in the local taxi's with others for safety in numbers and to reduce the costs, as sometimes the prices the cruise ships charge for excursions are a bit OTT. Also you find you do not see the real destination.

We jumped in the taxi and was taken through a number of small villages which at first can be  a bit scary, when you see men walking along the roads with guns, but having done this in other countries I was not to worried.  You have to remember this is how the drivers make there lively hoods and its not in there interest to take you somewhere that is not safe.  To be honest it gives you a true look into how people live rather than the tourist areas that are very commercialised.

The roads where not to bad, but in the villages they became dirt tracks in places.  The driver spoke good English which is always reassuring, and offered to stop at a few places- off course it would have been rude not to say yes to visiting one of the local cigar manufactures.  Now I do not smoke, but I did find it interesting to see a small group if men make the cigars, seeing how fast they work and the opportunity to purchase them as gifts or for your own pleasure. This was also cheaper than the port shops and they were open to bartering.

We headed off to the beach which was amazing and was able to purchase drinks from a local bar/hotel there was also a couple of chaps selling jewellery on the beaches which made great gifts.

The ocean was amazingly clear, as you walked out the shallows became steadily deeper with no surprise drop, I saw a blow fish just swimming along, the waters were so clean.
The beach was fine soft sand and gave me that incredible Caribbean beach you see in the brochures.

We got back to the port after a full day sun bathing with time to look around the port shops, which was a pretty area, It would be easy to spend at least half a day just in the port, however I am not one for shopping.

There was a lot of excursions to do for this port as with all ports of call. I did like the look of the catamaran ride however the beach ruled for me on this very rare occasion.

Dominica from afar

My brother also visited this destination for a couple of weeks, the prices are reasonable most of the year for the Caribbean.
